Update on Nunney Castle bridge

Since the closure of the Castle bridge in October 2024, I have been in regular contact with English Heritage (EH). Earlier this year, EH went through a restructure that lead to significant job losses and left no doubt the charity’s resources are very stretched. Whilst I own the Castle, my agreement with EH means I am restricted in how I can influence the timing of EH replacing the bridge.

Nevertheless, with a small working group of residents, among whom are two parish councillors and a bridge engineer, we are seeking together to achieve a new build of the bridge and full re-opening of the Castle to Nunney residents and visitors. While EH are working on costings, this group has identified a potential source of part funding for this project. How the full costs will be met remains uncertain at the moment, with the possibility that this is a combination of EH, grants and public fundraising.

I continue to be committed to the earliest possible re-opening and full access to the Castle and the working group will remain in frequent contact with EH. I will of course keep you updated of significant progress as it happens.

With thanks,
Robbie Walker
